The Doors

– Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger in conversation

Length: 14 min, 2 s // Recorded: 1983

The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. The band got its name from the title of Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception, which itself was a reference to a quote made by William Blake, “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” They were unique and among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly because of Morrison’s lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. After Morrison’s death on 3 July 1971 at the age of 27, the remaining members continued as a trio until disbanding in 1973. The Doors released eight albums between 1967 and 1971.

1983 saw the release of the live album Alive, She Cried, which was compiled from live recordings made between 1968 and 1970. The tapes consisted of the soundtrack to a 1968 Danish TV special and unreleased multitrack recordings from the Absolutely Live shows. This was the first “new” Doors material since “An American Prayer”. “Gloria” (recorded at the Aquarius Theater rehearsals) was edited and issued as a single and a video was created to promote the track.
